Drive-In Magnesium Anode Rod

Drive-In Magnesium Anode Rod: High-purity, steel-core rod with machined end for soil penetration. Includes protective cap and clamp for easy installation.

Category:

Description

This high-purity extruded magnesium rod with a steel core features a machined end designed for effortless soil penetration, either with a “spike” or a “45-degree angle cut.”

Equipped with a steel hexagonal head and a threaded UHMW polyethylene driving cap, this drive-in anode ensures the protection of the lead wire and soldered connection during installation. It also includes an adjustable stainless steel hose clamp with a set screw for easy attachment to the protected structure.

Ideal for cathodic protection in gas service entrance piping, gas distribution risers, termination of tracer wire in the utilities industry, and various specialized applications, this magnesium drive-in anode boasts a life expectancy ranging from 7 to 10 years depending on soil conditions.

Quality Substrate Material

Our magnesium drive-in anode is produced according to either the ASTM B843–M1C standard for high potential or the ASTM B843–AZ63B standard for standard potential, with the specified composition as follows:

Element High Potential (ASTM B843 – M1C) Standard Potential (ASTM B843 – AZ63B)

Two common types of cast magnesium anodes are available, offering different electro-potential options:

1. Standard Magnesium Alloy Anode:
– Nominal corrosion potential: -1.55 volts (compared to a Cu/CuSO4 reference electrode).
– Suitable for soil conditions with resistivity below 20 Ω·cm.

2. High Potential Magnesium Alloy Anode:
– Provides a higher open circuit voltage and driving potential.
– Generates an open circuit potential ranging from negative 1.7 to 1.75 volts, which is 20% to 30% higher than conventional magnesium anodes.
– Delivers increased current output and efficiency, offering effective cathodic protection while minimizing anode consumption.
– Ideally used for structures in soils with resistivities exceeding 2,000 Ω·cm or structures prone to multiple corrosion clusters.

Technical Measurement High Potential Standard Potential
Open Circuit Potential (-V) 1.7 ~ 1.75 1.5 ~ 1.55
Close Circuit Potential (-V) 1.58 ~ 1.62 1.45 ~ 1.50
Min. Current Capacity 500 A.h/lbs (1100 A.h/kg) 550 A.h/lbs (1230 A.h/kg)
Min. Current Efficiency 50% 55%

Remarks: Open/close circuit potential is with respect to a Saturated Calomel Reference Electrode.

Easy Installation

The angled tip facilitates easy insertion of the anode into the soil without the need for prior digging or hole drilling. It can be installed by a single person in a matter of minutes using just a hammer and a screwdriver.

Customized Configurations

Our magnesium drive-in anode is offered in three common sizes as listed below. Each standard anode is equipped with 3 feet of AWG #12 TW lead wire. Custom sizes for the anode and different lengths of wire can be provided upon customer request.
