Ribbon Magnesium Anode

Magnesium ribbon anodes provide superior protection against corrosion, making them ideal for cathodic protection in various applications.

Description

Magnesium anodes offer superior protection against corrosion compared to other galvanic materials. While typically cast, extruded magnesium configurations are advantageous for specific structures, especially those requiring cathodic protection in high resistivity environments.

Our magnesium ribbon anode, featuring an extruded ribbon wrapped around a galvanized steel core, ensures consistent current distribution and efficient discharge. Its enhanced surface area to weight ratio enables higher current outputs, making it ideal for applications in areas with limited space and high resistivity soil or freshwater. Common uses include protecting well-coated buried pipelines, internal water tank surfaces, and providing grounding protection against electrical interference.

Quality Substrate Material

Our magnesium ribbon anode is produced using high-purity magnesium, conforming to ASTM B843 – M1C standards.

High Current Output

This extruded magnesium ribbon anode has an increased surface area-to-mass ratio. With a high driving potential of -1.7V to -1.75V (CSE), it can generate more current than their cast magnesium counterparts. Generally, the current output is three to seven times greater than that found with cast anodes of the same weight.

Technical Measurement Performance
Open Circuit Potential (-V) 1.7 – 1.75
Close Circuit Potential (-V) 1.58 – 1.62
Current Density Soil: 3 mA/ft. (10 mA/m) / Freshwater: 0.9 mA/ft. (3 mA/m)
Current Capacity 500A.h/lbs (1100A.h/kg)
Current Efficiency 50% min.

Remarks: Open/close circuit potential is with respect to a Saturated Calomel Reference Electrode.

Uniform Current Distribution

The magnesium ribbon anode incorporates a robust galvanized steel core that extends along its length, guaranteeing effective electrical discharge by evenly distributing the current across its entire structure.

Easy Installation

The magnesium ribbon anode is highly flexible and occupies minimal space. It is typically coiled around the structure it protects, such as long-distance pipelines, crossing pipelines, large tanks, or silos, providing cathodic protection. Once installed, it operates automatically, requiring minimal maintenance and posing no adverse effects on the surrounding environment.

Customized Configurations

Our standard magnesium ribbon anode is flat and comes in flexible coils measuring 3/4” by 3/8”. Each coil contains a 0.135″ steel core wire running along its length, and the anode weighs around 0.243 pounds per foot. The length of the anode can be customized as needed.

Testing

We employ ISO 9001:2015 quality management system and rigorous internal testing standards to ensure the optimum lifespan and performance of our anodes. Each anode is labelled with a unique serial number for quality tracking.
